Travelling Nightmare

This morning i left to go to Tulsa for a few days for work. Today has overall, been a terrible travel day. I had the joy of sitting in an airplane at the gate for over an hour in St. Louis while apparently someone fro me the previous flight was arrested, so my 50 minute flight turned into an almost 2.5 hour flight. Once i finally got to Tulsa, my iPad gps took me to the wrong side of the city, so i got to tour the greater Tulsa area on small backroads. Elapse to 6:30 when I finally get to my hotel, which was clocking on a 14 hour day to find out that somehow the hotel managed to sell out except for one room, a smoking room. They apologized and said they would move me to another room tomorrow, so i wasn’t happy but I said that I would try to deal. Upon walking into the room, I instantly started coughing. I called the front desk and said that this really isn’t going to work, but due to this being a company direct bill situation, I don’t have many options of what can be done. The one big kink is that there is some sort of baseball tournament in town so there are no rooms available anywhere else either. I am just going to leave stuff in my rental car tonight and get clothes in throning so that they do not smell like smoke. I still smell the smoke on what i am wearing just from the hour i was in the room waiting for the manager to call me back, which never happened as I just got calls back from the front desk clerk. I went to Walgreens and got some candles to try and make it through the night without my lungs dying. I plan to seek out a nice hurt to heart with the manager in the morning before heading to work to make sure that this is resolved in my favor. Their guarantee is 100 percent satisfaction or the night is free, so I expect them to hold up to that even though it will really be my company who benefits, not me.

I still need to do some research to figure out what there is here to take some pictures of when i leave work tomorrow. I figure that there has to be something worthwhile, and i plan to find what that is. I just hope that the rest of my travel and hotel time goes smoothly.

Schedules Should be Written in Pencil

Well I wake up this afternoon to find an email that I am now going home a day earlier than I was really scheduled for originally, so I get to go home on Sunday. I am kind of torn as I would have preferred to have the extra money to spend at Dragon*Con, but it will be nice to get back home. I need to get my Lostume finished and start digging all of the other costumes out of the bins in order to start packing for the con. The other thing that I am kind of peeved about is that fact that I have not had a chance to get out and take any pictures this go round yet, so I am going to have to try to make it somewhere on Friday when I have the day off. I am thinking of driving to Santa Fe to see what I can find there, but I am not 100 percent sure yet.

For any of you who have been to Albuquerque or Santa Fe, any suggestions of where to go?

Extended stay

Well I found out today that my travel plans were not made correctly initially. Instead of being here until the 10th, I was supposed to be scheduled to be here until the 17th. Now I was debating whether or not I could stay. Sirius is coming back on the 16th, so I wasnt sure who would be able to watch him. Luckily Shane is able to let him out, so I will be able to stay as needed and get more money that will go towards Dragon*Con. One of the downsides of this is that I wasnt prepared to be here this long, so I did not pack as planned for this long of a stay, so I will get to do laundry about every two days. It could be worse. As for now, I am sitting here getting paid to do nothing. Cheers.

Well I have been in Albuquerque for a week now, and I haven’t really done anything except work and sleep. I have been working 7pm – 7am pretty much every day, and this is my 7th day straight of that schedule. I really can’t complain, because I have done the math, and I will be getting what equates to a months worth of pay for 2 weeks of work. My paycheck should end up being for around 196 hours for two weeks, with all of that time being 2nd or 3rd shift with a holiday thrown in the middle of all of that. I think that with that check, and some other money I have headed my way, I will have my car and credit card paid off in the very near future. The best part is that I am slated to come out here the first two weeks of August for the 2nd round of our new software implementation, and that paycheck will hit a few days before Dragon*Con.

It doesn’t look like I will be able to have time to make any new costumes for D*C this year due to being out here, but I am ok with that. At least I will be clear of debt except for my harley and house, and that will be of more benefit in the long run.

Time for Some Traveling Music

I got confirmation today that I will be going to Albuquerque for two weeks for work. We are launching a new system, and they want people from the Corp office to go and man the launch war room. I volunteered as it will be extra money in overtime as well as a chance to add another city to places that I have been. Sirius is going to go to Atlanta while I am gone to stay with my mom and he will get to play with my nephew.

The one big downside is that I will not be in town for July 4th. I hope that I am able to go out and enjoy the holiday but I am not 100 percent sure what the transportation situation will be yet. I guess I will see once I get there.

When work politics gets in the way of work

There are times when the politics of work, make it very hard to actually do the work that needs to be done. I am currently going through this in my department, where the manager is realizing that the few of us who actually come to work to, you know, work, are getting very frustrated with the others who are dragging along. Sadly, instead of doing something to remove the problem, the problem just gets worse due to crappy management. Something will change that only half of the department will follow for more than 2 or 3 days, and that just makes the entire situation worse, as it puts even more work on those who follow the guidelines set forth for them. This could end up being a long week here at work. Today is Cinco de Mayo though, so maybe a pitcher of margaritas will help with the BS.

Sickness has arrived

Well last Friday morning, I started getting a scratchy throat and had to blow my nose quite a bit. Over the weekend I took over the counter meds, and that seemed to clear up my nose, but I still had a deep cough. The cough just wouldn’t go away. I went to the clinic today, and I was running a fever and have a viral infection. I was told to stay home for the next two days while taking the meds that I had to get. This does create quite a problem, as Chattacon is this weekend, and it doesn’t look like I am going to be able to go. I can’t drink on the meds I am on, and that is a big portion of Chattacon, and without that aspect, the cost of the badge makes it very cost prohibitive. I hate to miss this one, as it was one of my first conventions to go to, and it has become a tradition. I would rather get well though, as I hate being sick.

I thought I had updated recently

I thought that I had put in another update recently, but apparently I must have dreamed that.

I finally got over my sickness right before Christmas. On Christmas eve day, I arrived at the old Nashville prison where Green Mile and Last Castle were filmed for the Metro Police Department toy/food basket program. The HOG chapter helped start this, and it has been going for 47 years now. Officers submit the names of families that they encounter throughout the year that will need some help for the holidays, and they are added to the list. This year over 220 families benefited from the program. What did I do for this? Each family get 4 bushel baskets of food. I was one of the 4 people on the loading dock who put these baskets into patrol cars and personal vehicles for people to go and deliver that morning. It was a great time. It was cold and rainy, but it was for a good cause, so you kind of have to look past that part of it.

I worked on Christmas, if you call finished season 1 of Burn Notice and starting season 2 work. I then hopped in the car and headed down to Dallas(Atlanta). Right when i passed Chattanooga, my car started losing RPMs and lurching. I had to drive slow the rest of the way, but I eventualy made it there on Christmas night. I took my Jeep to the dealership the next day, and found out more reasons why I will never get a car at Carmax again. The hoses to the vacuum for the fuel pump had been repaired with electrical tape instead of replaced, so that seemed to be what was causing the problem.

Christmas was pretty low key, as I got some things that I will need for the house, and then gift cards for Walmart, Subway and Las Palmas. It was nice to be away from work for a few days. Sirius loved it down in Atlanta, as he ran around with my nephew chasing him for 3 straight days.

As I was driving back to Nashville on Sunday, sure enough, right around Chattanooga, my car started doing the same thing again. It turns out my throttle sensor had crapped out. Almost 500 dollars later, I was able to get my car from the dealer in Franklin yesterday. So far it is working, but I will believe that when I see it.

The weather has been cold the last 2 days, but dry which was nice as the bike was my mode of transport. A few weeks ago I got some heated gloves, and was finally able to install them yesterday. Heated gloves are the best invention ever for a motorcycle I have decided. It is amazing how that little bit of heat can turn a cold day into an enjoyable ride. I am doing a polar bear ride on Saturday and then a trip coming up the following week to see the bald eagles at Reelfoot lake.

New years will probably consist of sitting on the couch watching a movie like it has the last couple of years. I might pick up the new Call of Duty with my Walmart gift card, and if I decide to do that, then I will be fighting the world wars all throughout the day.

The Big Bang Theory

While working the mid-shift at the data center this week, I have given into watching The Big Bang Theory. Some of my friends suggested it to me, but I hadn’t had the time to watch it. I broke down and torrented the entire series, and I only have 3 episodes left to go. I have to admit, I love the show. I am hooked. I now have another show that I need to watch on Monday nights. It is very topical to things that I deal with, and I have found myself laughing out loud.

I will be glad to be done with this midshift BS. Rumor is that it might not be a permanent thing, and that would be a blessing.

The holiday weekend

Well this weekend was interesting to say the least. I worked on turkey day, which mainly consisted of watching jackass 2.5, a river runs through it, and the first 6 episodes of 24 season 1.

On black Friday, all that I did shopping wise was to go to the cigar store to smoke the Opus X cigar that I picked up on Tuesday. I did break down and get a Diamond Crown Maximus while I was there as well, so I guess that makes me part of the black Friday crowds.

I did have an odd encounter at the cigar store. One of the people in there was one of the customers that I found most annoying when I worked at DK. He then decided to start talking to me. I view the cigar store kind of like the men’s room. It is a private place unless you are commenting on a game on tv etc, or you add to a conversation already in progress.

On Saturday I trooped the predators game for the sci-fi night. I ended up handling since by the time I helped paint Summer and Raychel blue, it was time to go out, and Gnash the mascot wore my Jedi robe and used my light saber when rapelling down from the rafters to the ice.

Today I slept nice and late and then went over to Radnor lake to play with the camera some more to try working on the manual settings. I took one of those pictures that you don’t expect. I got a picture of a buck mounting a doe. There were 2 other bucks right there too. It was kind of a crazy sight to see. I will post some pictures later on of the weekend’s events.
