Technology Highs and Lows

Well the past couple of days have had a mixture of nice tech, and crappy tech experiences. On the upside, I finally took the time to change the look of my wordpress. My host doesn’t have MySQL 4, so I am having to use a legacy release for now. I am trying to ge them to upgrade the MySQL but I am sure that will be a lengthy process. I have been searching for some templates to use, and most of them are for the most recent WP release. I finally found a version of K2 for the older release, and that solved that predicament.

On the downside, my xbox 360 decided to die on me. I didn’t get the red ring of death, but rather the red quadrant of death. From what I can tell from the net, it is the video heatsync that has gone foul. I need to call M$ and get a send back code so that I can get it repaired. I have gotten into playing the zombie mode of Call of Duty: World at War and this has distracted from what I need to be doing of packing up the stuff I have accumulated over the past 8 years of living here. This is a daunting task that I have not been able to bring myself to do on a regular basis yet.

Part of this process is getting rid of a metric ton of crap that I don’t want to move, so I need to list quite a bit of stuff on ebay and craigslist to get rid of it. Anything geek or costume related I will put up here as well and give friends first dibs. Well it is time to get back to LOST for now.

At long last. Google calendar plays nice with the iPhone.

Google finally released the iPhone client to sync the google calendar to the iphone natively. I have been using Google calendar since it was first released. I love that it is easy to access and that my friends can subscribe to it so that you can see if people are available for events etc. Google has been pretty good about having mobile options to access it, but the options for the iphone were lacking until now. The one downside is that it goes through Activesynce, so I had to decide between my work email and google calendar, so I went with google calendar for right now. I can still login to work email through the web client. If you have an iphone, you should definitely check it out. Here is a link to the setup info.

Leverage, LOST, and xBox

After finishing up Dexter, I needed something to watch, so I started watching Leverage. I had heard Stephen from granades.com and of Whatthecast mention this on one of the podcast episodes, and I have to agree with his view that this is a great show. There is just something about con artists who con other con artists. It is very Dexteresque in that the main character only targets like minded targets. I am four episodes in so far, and I can’t believe how quickly the hour passes. I have the other 4 episodes downloaded, and hope to get them finished soon.

Last night was the long awaited 2 hour LOST premiere. Once again, there were many IMs, texts and tweets to people that mainly consisted of the letters W, T and F. I am interested to see where the the show is headed and will eagerly look forward to each Wednesday night for the foreseeable future.

About a year ago, my buddy told me about the program called Connect360. This “tricks” the xbox into thinking that a mac is a pc which allows for content to be streamed to the xbox. The other day, I finally took the time to update my software, and try it out for videos on my xbox, since the xbox can now handle divx movies. Needless to say, I am in love. This is what saved me over this week while I was under a pile of blankets on the couch. Being able to watch downloaded programs on my 56″ tv vs my 15″ laptop was a blessing. If you have a mac and a 360, then check out this software. it was well worth the 20 bucks.

I had another friend call me this afternoon offering me a pass to go and see the new Underworld screener tonight. I am excited. Granted it isn’t Kate Beckinsale, but the main actress did a good job in Doomsday, so I am hopeful. I will post my thoughts on it either later on tonight, or tomorrow.

Test post for new lj iPhone app

This is only a test. I saw testing it out and thought that I would give it a try. So far I like the native lj links for users etc.
