On Turning 30

Well I am one day out from turning 30. This has really been weighing on me the past few days. When I was younger, I remember having to make a list of things that I thought that I would accomplish by the time I turned 30. I don’t know where that actual list now lives, but I have a pretty good idea of the the stuff that was on it, and I am pretty sure that many of those things have not been achieved. There were probably things on there like have a mansion, and multiple cars, 2.5 kids and a picket fence.

I am doing well for myself, but I find it scary how quickly I have reached this point when it seems like it was just a couple of years ago that I was leaving high school and starting college. I find myself playing the “what if” game over the past few weeks. What if I realized that I was going to major in marketing instead of music? Where would I have ended up going to school? What hobbies would I have now? What city would I be living in etc? I know that this serves no purpose as we don’t have a time machine to go back and see how things could have played out if another path would have been followed. I do think that it would be great to have a It’s a Wonderful Life moment just to see how things would be different, but this bodes the question, would I like what I saw? Would I still be doing the hobbies that I enjoy so much today?

Many of the people who I went to school with have families and that really freaks me out. That is one of the things that really helps to drive in the point that you are getting older when your college and high school buddies go from weekend trips to the bar to weekend trips to babies R us.

I guess I have to look at tomorrow as just another day. I don’t think that when I wake up in the morning there will be an earth shattering change in how I have to go about my day to day life. I just need to find a way to shake this quasi birthday depression so that I can get back to my regularly scheduled programming.

ConPhotog.net

I have decided that I want to start keeping my convention photography on its own URL, so ConPhotog.net was created. I will slowly be adding my backlog on con pics to the new site, and will then just post links here from that site when new conventions pictures are added.

The site just went up today, so it needs quite a bit of tweaking, but I just wanted to get the URL posted.

ConNooga 2010

This last weekend was my first time to attend ConNooga which was held at the Chattanooga Choo Choo hotel. I didn’t really attend much of the programming, but it was great to have a weekend away hanging out my friends. I was able to get some decent long exposure shots of Jess hooping in her gaga disco bra with her new LED hoop. I really like how they turned out.

First Derby Bout of the Year

Chattacon 2010

This last weekend was the first convention of the year that I attended, Chattacon in Chattanooga, TN. I worked for part of the con at the beer booth, and also had a photographer badge, even though I didn’t snap that many shots over the weekend. This con is always a great time, and a good chance to catch up with people that you haven’t seen since Dragon*Con in many cases.

They had the band Arc Attack there and i was able to get some decent shots of their show that is conducted using singing Tesla coils.

The New Year

It has been a bit since I have updated, and I plan to work through some backlogged pictures that I have, but the holidays have taken up most of the extra time that I have had recently. I finally have my seamless paper set up in a permanent place at my house, so I hope to get some more people over to get some costume pictures as they are able.

Another thing that I would like to do this year is to get out on some trips where I focus solely on photography. I would like to do a couple of weekend trips on the motorcycle to try and find some nice remote spots to take some pictures. I need to get out the maps and see what kind of trips that I can plan.

One of the final things that I am working on is on using different off camera lighting where I am not shooting against the seamless paper. This involves quite a bit of trial and error, but the best way to get it right is by practicing. I also hope to acquire a new camera body later on in the year and maybe a new lens or two as money allows. As of now, I am thinking of a Canon 7D, but there is a chance that I will go with a full frame camera, but I have plenty of timeto research my options.

I hope everyone is off to a great start to the new year.

Watertown World War 2 Veteran’s Day Reenactment

I had the pleasure of attending the annual Watertown, TN Veteran’s Day World War 2 reenactment this past Saturday. Each year they do a mock battle where the allies liberate the town from German occupation. They use blanks, and everything that they wear must be proper to the period. It was a great site to see. My friend Ivan started doing reenactments, and I am glad that he told me about this event.
