I got an email yesterday, right before Heroes was about to come on about a paypal transaction for eBay fees. I thought that it must be a normal phishing email, but went up to my comp to be able to login to paypal just to be sure. Low and behold, there was indeed a transfer sitting there for over 1300 dollars in eBay fees. I found this very disturbing as I haven’t sold anything on eBay since last July. I start with calling paypal, and was told, there is nothing they can do, and that I should call ebay, but they didn’t have a number etc, so I ask for their supervisor. After another 20 minutes of holding, I get a supervisor on the line, and they tell me that I would need to call eBay. Apparently in that 20 minutes, eBay started a phone bank as the supervisor had a number for me to call. At this point, I am 45 minutes in on my phone calling experience, so I tell the paypal guy that I am going to call eBay on 3 way calling, so that we can get this all worked out, as it seems to be an issue between eBay and paypal. I have to admit, I was kind of surprised they agreed to this, but was glad they did.
We get an eBay rep on the phone, and they say that they see I have made no charges, and eBay did not request any fees. One would thing, as eBay and paypal are owned by the same parent company that this would be sufficient to get this cleared up. The paypal guy essentially was not listening to the eBay rep, and kept saying that it seems like it hasn’t shown up in their records yet. I was told to dispute the fee on the paypal site, and they would investigate. I ask some information on how the process works, as I was about to call my bank and i was told that I needed to let Paypal deal with it first, and I kindly disagreed and said that I would be placing a hold with my bank to prevent any funds from being withdrawn. I figure once the money leaves by account, chances of getting it back are rather slim.
I call my bank and get a hold placed on any withdrawals from my account, and then proceed to call back eBay without Paypal on the line, just to check on some things. I speak to a rep and then to an ebay fraud specialist, as I figure having eBay working on this with Paypal might help to get it resolved in a more expedient fashion, so that I can unfreeze my bank account as soon as possible. As for now, I am in a waiting game for the most part which pisses me off even more. I hate that Paypal is becoming a necessary evil for online commerce for many places, or after this, I would close my account in a heartbeat.
