Turkey Day

So I have decided to do the Turkey Day Cannonball run. After I close the store tonight, I will go home, get some clothes, get Sirius, and drive to Atlanta. The drive will probably take me about three hours to do. I will then be in Atlanta will around 5 a.m. Eastern on Friday morning, when I will head back to Nashville in order to be at work at 9. I will be interested to see how many people will be shopping tonight. I will say, that I love that Panera has free wifi that I can mooch off of during my lunch break. Due to parking and traffic, I really can’t go home for lunch anymore, which sucks. Maybe once the holiday season slows down it will get better, but I kinda doubt it. So if any of you are bored tonight after 10, and feel like giving me a call to keep me awake and alert on my way to Atlanta, then feel free to give me a call. 615-414-7303. I might be able to get in some good conversations with the truck drivers, but I can’t depend on that. I hope that you all have a great Turkey day.

What happened to Thanksgiving?

I was wondering today, what happened to Thanksgiving? I remember that there used to be a day of the year when you gathered with family as a way to be thankful for what you have been blessed with. Now, it seems that the Christmas season begins at the beginning of October. Halloween and Thanksgiving are completely passed over, to make room for Christmas trees and boxed cards. I remember when I was in school, we were given a half day the day before Thanksgiving to allow for travel to see family, and that ceases to exist now. Stores don’t close early the day before, and many are starting to stay open on the day of. I do have to say, from what I remember, Publix is one exception to that. They have signs and commercials, well last year at least, that say, we will be closed so that our associates can spend time with their families. Someone in that company is doing something right.

I am debating whether or not I am going to be able to see family this Thanksgiving. I close on Wednesday nights, so I wouldn’t get to my house until around 10:30. I would then have to get some stuff together and then drive to Atlanta, only to be there for less than a day, since I would have to drive back to be at work for opening on Friday. I really want to go, but I think with the stress level that I have had lately, that might just be the tipping point of going crazy. Seven hours in a car, to be able to spend about 6 or 7 hours eating Turkey and seeing my relatives. The debate will linger until Wednesday night I think. I have had offers of places that I could go here, but it really just isn’t the same thing. Most of my family events now happen in Atlanta due to my sister being there, and the fact that my parents bought a condo there since they visit that often. I would really like to have the holiday in Texas. Maybe next year that will be able to happen.

This whole scenario is going to play out again in December, as Christmas day falls on a Sunday this year, and I have to work at 8 the day after. I am hoping that I can get something worked out to flop days with someone, since I have Tuesday off, where I would be able to stay in Atlanta for at least 2 days and not being there for a cumulative total of less than 24 hours.

What are you doing for Thanksgiving?

Hmm…

When does volunteering for the good of the group become being taken advantage of? I have been wondering this lately. I mean when people think that you will volunteer to change things like your schedule, then why do they find it necessary to rely on that fact. Does being somewhat flexible become a standard? What motivation is there to volunteer in the future? They are just setting themselves up for when the time of being nice will end. Any thoughts?

The update about the weekend

Well after all of the time and money, I finished my costume. There are things that I already want to approve on it, but they can wait for a while. I am pleased with how it turned out, and I got some great comments from some of the other Star Wars costumers which was cool. The debut of my costume was on Saturday night when I went to the party at and Steve’s place. It was a fun party where once again, the HP group moved to Firefly conversation, and then eventually Star Wars. The Star Wars was some of my fault, as I had my copy of Dressing a Galaxy there that I got that day at work. (Book by the costumer for the prequel films with VERY nice pictures of costume details.) , , Ivan, Summer and Tambo all came after they were done trooping a Pumpkinfest so it was a great time. I don’t have any pictures from that night, but I know that Gena and Tambo took some, so I will hopefully be able to get some soon.

On Sunday night, , , , , Jesse, Rosie and I went to a cornmaze. Ryan and I went in costume, and I imagine that it must have been pretty funny for the workers to all of the sudden see lightsabers light up over the field of corn in a marco polo fashion. Amazingly, they do make a damn good flashlight.

On Monday, I wore my costume to work, without the mask or gloves, as I would not have been able to help customers with them on. Right when I got off of work, and I headed out to Rivergate mall to troop their Halloween event for kids with some of the 501st Southern Outpost. It was my first trooping event and it probably made some of those kids years, especially since Matt was there in his Wookiee. Here is a pic from that.

When we left there, we headed for Walmart so that Glenn, Loki and Ryan could get their DVDs at midnight. Very mixed crowd at the Charlotte Ave Walmart at midnight, but some action figures were found that had eluded collectors for a while, so that was a good thing. There was very little pomp and circumstance for the DVD release there, which we were all surprised about. No big displays or anything, and no video games in sight. Who would have guessed?

Tuesday was the Toys for Tots fundraiser at Toys R Us. Joe put on a great event and there was a great turnout of both young and old. I don’t know how much was raised for TFT yet, but any money for a good cause like that is good money. After trooping, buying my movie and Battlefront II, it was time to head home. Here are some pictures.

The next trooping event will be this Saturday at the Movie Gallery in Nippers Corner. There will a good number of troopers there, so be sure and come with your camera in hand. I think that it will be from 3-8 or 9.
