Yet another Batman movie

I had heard from just about everyone that I needed to go see Batman Begins. I went with and saw it last night. I have to say that I really did like the movie. It really shows that Batman is just a guy with good training and very cool toys that he puts to use to fight crime. He doesn’t need to be as fast as a speeding bullet, or be stronger than steel. He just needs kevlar, military prototype weapons and billions of dollars. I wonder if Bill Gates is going to try to be Batman now. I am sure that he could get all of the same type toys made. I guess that we will have to wait and see.

One of the most exciting aspects of seeing Batman was the very first thing that I saw on the screen, the trailer for Serenity on the big screen. It just looks so much cooler in that setting. I wanted to stand up and say, I have seen this movie and it is much better than the trailer leads you to believe. Go rent the Firefly DVDs and watch them first and you will like the movie even more, but I didn’t. Instead I just sat there watching it and got more excited.

Speaking of Serenity and Firefly, we started a Yahoo group for Nashville Browncoats. Here is the link. http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/nashvillebrowncoats/

If you are a fan you should join. If you are not yet a fan, then go and rent the Firefly DVDs, watch them, and then you can join. Most everyone I have talked to who has watched the series really loved it. It is just one of those shows that is written so well, that you just get drawn in. We will start having some viewing parties etc, and then as the time comes closer for the Big Damn Movie, we will work out details of the Serenity Campout at Hollywood 27.

Stressed Out

Have you ever been so annoyed and stressed that your neck muscles spasm and you feel as if you need to break something? That is me right now. Sucks doesn’t it.

Since I Found Serenity

Well I drove to Memphis along with and to see a screening of Serenity. If you don’t know, Serenity is the movie that will be coming out in September based on Firefly. I have been bitten by the Firefly and I am ok with that. I won’t really say anything about the movie except the quote that I told the Univeral represenative who was taking quotes outside of the door. “Fucking awesome. I would see it 3 more times in a row if it was playing.” I do know that I will do my best to be at every other screening that there is.

I did meet Nashville folks and two others, that I hope forgive me for not remembering their names. There were tons of great browncoats in Memphis which made the movie even more fun. There were a couple of folks who made up little chinese food containers that had blue gloves in it, kaylee umbrellas and dinosaurs. If you don’t get these references, then you just need to watch the DVDs.

I am proud to say that Erin and myself were the only two folks there in true browncoats. I had a couple of people take pictures of my costume which I thought was cool too. Here are a couple of pictures.

Back in the Lower 48

I am finally back from Alaska. Overall I had a great trip. The scenery in Alaska and the parts of Canada that I went to were amazing. I took lots of pictures of mountains and then also while we were in glacier bay. That was really cool because you would hear a lound thundering noise and then see part of the glacier falling off of the side and crashing into the water. I got some neat pictures of the ice splashing down into the bay. The things that I didn’t see that I really wanted to were a bear and a moose. I did however, get a picture of two Canadian geese, while in Canada. I had two different cameras so that is why my pictures seem a little out of order. Also switching between memory cards made some things not right, as the eagles that are some of the first pictures, were the last ones that I took when we got off of the ship in Seward, Alaska before the 3 hour bus ride to Anchorage.

All of the pictures that I took can be found at www.dwrd.net/alaska and then I also put some up on my moblog at dwrd.textamerica.com

I really want to go back to Alaska at some point. After hearing what kind of money can be made there working for a few months out of the year, I don’t think that I would mind living up there for a year or two. Most people up there work 4 or 5 months and can live on that money for the rest of the year. All of the places that I went were setup as large tourist traps as is to be expected with the number of cruise ships that visit. In Skagway, the population is around 600. 800 after the summer workers come into town. Anywhere between 3-12,000 depending on how many ships are in for the day. They said that the town pretty much becomes a ghost town around 8pm when all of the ships are gone, and the only things still open are the bars. I really liked Juneau. Apparently I had the look of a local, because I was asked for directions around town 3 times, asked if I worked at the Alaskan brewery due to how I was dressed,(I bought a hat and fleece vest) and then also was asked by a couple of people what cruise ship that I worked on. I think that if I did decide to go live up there, I would go with somewhere like Juneau. Rustic, yet not lacking technology like some of the places that I visited.

It was nice to get some reading down while I was on the trip. I read the book Eldest which is the sequel to the book Eragon by Christopher Paolini. Eldest comes out on August 23, and it will sell like hot cakes. The book is written very well and it has some great plot twists in it that are unexpected. I also read the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the Magician’s Nephew, and most of Prince Caspian by Lewis. I am also about a quarter of the way into the book the Widow of the South, by Robert Hicks, and so far it is pretty good. It comes out in September, and it is my read while at the pool book.

I am not looking forward to going back to work, but that is always the case whenever you come back from a vacation. You never want to return to the real world, but it is necessary. At least Harry Potter is close. It gives me something to look forward to.
